Seth Thomas Violin Shelf Clock. There is a lot to say about this Clock; so please read all the information I have given and look at all the photos I have taken. I could only up load 12 photos; so if you need a particular photo please ask, I have many. I WELCOME ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS.
I bought several clocks that I will be listing over the next month. This one was made by the Seth Thomas Clock Company of Thomaston, Connecticut (Marked with Label, See Photos). It is known as the Violin shelf clock, for obvious reasons. When I bought this clock, I did not know anything about it. As a musician I just loved it. I quickly learned that they are very rare. There are, as with most things, reproductions out there, and frankly, I do not know if this is one of them; except for the Authentic Seth Thomas Label which you can see in the Photos. I also have photos of the clock works U. Stamped on it and all other relevant parts of the clock. As I understand it this clock is not listed in any of the known Seth Thomas clock catalogs. From what I have read Seth Thomas started making it, most likely, as a special order in or around 1885. It is obvious it was made in the form of a violin. This Violin Clock is made of walnut and as you can see in the photos has aged well with an amazing patina! The grain in the walnut is beautiful. The door is hinged on the right side and latches from the left.
This glass is decorated with gold depicting musical staffs and sheet music. The Detail on this clock is also beautiful with carvings which were applied to the front surfaces and are in excellent original condition.
The head stock of the Violin neck is also hand carved. The Violin is upright on a base with four (4) wooden feet. This Violin clock is in excellent condition with the normal wear of a vintage clock. As pictured, you can see stress marks (splits in the wood, probably from dryness) in the wood.
Again, they are all pictured. Looks like 6 or so. They are not glaring so look closely at each photo. It comes with pendulum and key. The label is pasted inside the case and reads MANUFACTUERD BY / Seth Thomas Clock Company / THOMASTON, CONN.This case measures About 29 inches tall, 13 5/8 inches wide and 4 3/4 inches deep. It has been running since I bought it. Strikes on the hour and once on the half hours. All Claims will have to be initiated at your end.
