Antique Charles Jacques Mantel Clock. 7 Wire Gong Chime - Trinity or Westminster. Rare and Uncommon Clock from this Maker. Here is an opportunity to own a rare and uncommon Charles Jacques Tambour Case Clock with a 7 Wire Gong Chimes and Strike unit that is in very nice condition.
Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! The clock dates to the mid 1910s period. Very good condition clock case here. Nice golden colored finish to the case. Not sure what wood type this is.
Very little wear, certainly some crazing to the finish. Very well taken care of over the years, not one of your stored in the attic cases that shows heat damage. This maker was known for making many more Grandfather Clocks, than mantel clocks.
We can therefore better control our acquisition costs, keep commission costs low (if applicable), and finally, we don't have the overhead that the higher end houses and galleries pass on to their clients. This clock was probably made in the early 1900s to mid 1910's period. Not sure what model this is yet. You be the judge at to the clock's age before acquiring. Nice solid wood case on this clock. Has a beautiful golden brown finish to the case. No cracks, repairs or splits to the case that we can ascertain. The finish to the case does show some minor finish wear from time. See nothing on the inside of the case or the outside to show that the case was ever refinished at any time. A small ding in the wood front bezel at about the 1:30 position. The case has the number "270" impressed on the bottom of it. The 8 day brass clock and chime movement appears to be in good condition. This maker was known for fusee movements, but appears this one is springs encased in brass containment, unless fusee component is in there as well. The clock is quite heavy for it's size. The three wind springs feel sound when keyed. Beautiful brass movement in this clock. Well polished and designed back plate. Has "Baden" and the maker's name Charles Jacques on the back plate. Also, the serial number of "314833".The appropriate pendulum bob is with the clock. Has two chime options, Trinity and Westminster. The chimes option is selected by a switch on the right side of the face.
The clock was made to chime every 15 minutes and then chimes, and strikes the number of hours on the hour. Also, striking, and chiming as expected as well. Also, has a switch to silence the chiming of the clock. The clock comes with an old wind key as well, see pic. There is no representation that the clock is in original condition, or will continue to be in working order. The face of the clock does show some moderate wear to the silver colored finish.
Clock maker name is not on the face. The face is made of tin and has raised gold colored roman numerals. The clock hands match and look appropriate to the clock. The front wood bezel door is in place, and the glass is there as well. No cracks or blistering to the glass.
The rear wood door of the clock is still in place. The metal meshing in it is loose from the rear door and needs some attention. The clock comes with the 4 original wood feet. The clock will come with a winding key. The clock stands 11-3/8" tall, by 21.5" across, by 8-3/8 wide.
The clock face is 6-11/16 across. This was definitely a quality clock made around 100 years ago. Some information about this unique clock maker, Charles Jacques, from the internet. The Charles Jacques saga is a complex tale that was the subject of an article in the NAWCC Bulletin in April, 1996.
Elliott and Harington Chimes in 1894. The grand jury dismissed the complaint a week later. Like many creative, invention-driven entrepreneurs, Jacques made it through the tough times and bounced back, his next appearance being with Bawo and Dotter, a major New York importer located at 30 Barclay Sreet, NYC. Francis Bawo and his two partners hired Jacques in 1895 to run their new clock department because he had experience importing hall clocks from England. Dotter was deceased by this time and had previously terminated his partnership with Bawo on January 1, 1891.
They apparently turned over the entire second floor of their retail store at 26 Barclay Street to Jacques, who advertised his new hall clocks: The movements are principally of Elliott's make, striking Westminster and Wittington chimes on 8 bells or gongs. " These ads continued to show Elliott movements through 1898, the year Bawo and Dotter announced they "...
Now control Junghans, the larger German clockmaking firm that had previously acquired Gustav Becker and Lenzkirch, along with a myriad of other Black Forest clockmaking firms... And that's a whole other story itself. Charles Jacques held Patent #685,045 for creating variations of a hammer mechanism for striking tubular bells. Patent #686,301 included a solid cap closing the top of the tube, a transverse tube enclosing the supporting cable, and tuning by means of cutting away part of the tube or perforating or notching it.
Jacques' patent was assigned to Bawo & Dotter, a corporation of New Jersey. Meanwhile, back at the firm, Jacques continued to receive clock-related patents, including a 13-bell chime clock. 1n 1901 he obtained an American patent for a clock-chime, and another for a tubular bell of different shape than those made by Walter H. All three of these patents were assigned to Bawo & Dotter in New York City, but who were also described as a corporation of New Jersey. Any or all of these patents may have formed part of the basis of a lawsuit by Durfee against Bawo in 1902, on the grounds of patent infringement.
Durfee lost the lawsuit, and with it his American monopoly on tubular clock chimes. Another major NYC importer with whom he was strategically aligned. Charles Jacques, perhaps the most innovative of his peers, died on February 4, 1920. If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, I would suggest you steer clear. One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art.
