The dial and rear case label have been replaced to match how the clock would have looked in 1905. Cosmetic Restoration: The entire case was carefully disassembled, and each individual section was hand cleaned to remove built up dirt and grime.
After the cleaning stage, each section is then hand polished at high speed with a custom soft pad attachment that revives gloss and clarity in the celluloid casing. Then, the case engravings are carefully cleaned and filled with a faux gold paste. The final stage is a protective wax coating to seal previous efforts which also provides a final preventative layer of protection on the casing against future wear and tear. At this point, the entire case is reassembled starting with the top section, case front, sides, and base. I carefully sort all hardware (including screws, column caps/ bases, columns, side and front case decorations, as well as case feet) so that they are replaced back exactly where they were at the start of the restoration.
This ensures the original look of the clock is preserved and that there is no additional mistakes in the reassembly process. Mechanical Restoration: Often with these American time and strike clocks, as is the case with Seth Thomas, the original production process applied a form of'gold-guilt' to the wheels and movement plates over the surface of the brass.
This factory finish is extremely thin and fairly rare to find in original condition (not corroded/ otherwise stripped down to brass). Whenever possible, if this factory layer is in good enough condition following the cleaning process, I try to preserve this. If the gold layer is damaged I go through a polishing process on all brass surfaces so the movement is clean and presentable regardless. On this particular clock, the gold-gilt layer was long removed from a previous repair, so I opted to polish all brass components to a uniform look. Considering this, all steel components (pinions, pivots, arbors, crutch, strike levers, and hammer) are all checked and carefully cleaned and polished. The springs are also checked for wear/ cracking and again, preserved to the original movement whenever possible.
These springs were carefully stretched, checked, cleaned and oiled. A total of 18 bushings were installed on this movement.
All pivots, both crutch pallets, crutch play-wire and spring pivots were carefully oiled, the crutch wire was also lubricated to dampen excess noise during operation. This movement was tested for several weeks and it keeps good time and strikes the hour and half hour correctly. Included is an original Seth Thomas #89 movt. Format key, as well as an original Seth Thomas adjustable pendulum bob. Overall, this is a beautiful clock with a near perfect Adamantine casing and a fresh look.
It is fully operational and should provide many years of enjoyment. Mechanical in nature, this is not a'plug and play' device, and will require setup by an experienced clock enthusiast. It needs to be set on a level surface, pendulum hung and adjusted if necessary to ensure the movement is in beat. Care must be taken to ensure the pendulum is removed from the suspension spring hook prior to moving the case, failure to do so may result in damage to the clock mechanism. The clock will be carefully and thoroughly packed with bubble wrap, paper insulation, packing peanuts, e.
