Mounted On Wood Backer w/ a Plaque. Wood Bracket Made from White House National Tree 1986. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself! Great piece of National and MD Eastern shore history here!
Nice looking wall clock here. Made by the Seth Thomas Company in the USA. Have not taken the movement out of the case to see what the serial number is. Would guess from design that the clock was made after WWII. Nice silver colored lacquered metal case here. The lacquer shows some moderate finish loss to the clock case. The numbering and minute markings are done in black on the silver background face. The hands match and look appropriate to the clock. The slow/fast adjustment lever is in place on the face of the clock, as is the strike/silent switch, and both seem to work as well. The metal clock case is all there. No dings or dents to the case. Does show some moderate lacquer loss to the case, on the bezel and the sides of the case. The case has a screw off bezel.
The glass is intact, no cracks or blistering to the glass. The clock has an 8 day mechanical brass movement. The wind springs feels sound when keyed. The clock will come with a vintage wind key.
Cannot speak to the accuracy of the clock as impacted by wind strength, elevation and humidity wherever the clock resides. Nice silver colored plaque with incised writing. Gives a nice short history of the wood backer. Some pictures of the Lady Talbot are also included in the pics. The Skipjack boat is not a part of this offer, just sharing the boat that this item is related to thru the red fir backer with the clock. The clock face is 3.5 across. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Some interesting information from the Washington Post in early 1987 about this story on the plaque from the internet. NATIONAL CHRISTMAS TREE TO SET SAIL ON THE BAY. 1 -- A Maryland man will save the national Christmas tree in front of the U.
Capitol from becoming a pile of mulch when he lathes the log into a part for his sailing vessel, in a tribute to outgoing House Speaker Thomas P. The Massachusetts Democrat turned on the lights on the 50-foot California red fir for the holiday season. "I have the greatest respect for the man and the greatest respect for the party, " said A. (Bird) Quimby, 71, a resident of Skipton on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He's almost a dying breed of politicians. Quimby's lathe won't stop when the log is fashioned into either a mast or boom for his boat, known as a skipjack. He said he will use all the wood to create further mementos of the tree, including a Christmas tree ornament for O'Neill. No one has ever asked for the tree before, according to the U. Capitol's assistant landscape architect, Louis Bean. He said the tree usually is ground into mulch for use on the Capitol grounds. Quimby, who has taken various state Democratic leaders for trips on the Chesapeake Bay on his skipjack, the Talbot La-Every man, once in a lifetime, is entitled to a masterpiece, and this is mine. (Bird) Quimby dy, went to Rep.
To see if he could have the tree to use as either a mast or boom on his boat. "To make it a part of a skipjack, one of the original workboats of the Chesapeake Bay, I thought was rather a unique idea, " Dyson said. Bean said the tree will have its decorations removed beginning 7:30 a. Tomorrow and the limbs will be stripped off before it is loaded on a flatbed trailer for hauling to Maryland at Quimby's expense.
The Talbot Lady was completed in 1984 and was fashioned from plans of Baltimore's Minnie V. It is decorated with other significant Maryland ornaments, such as a figurehead fashioned after Lady Talbot, a likeness of Chessie, the legendary Chesapeake Bay monster, and diamondback terrapins. Quimby expects to have the tree home by Saturday evening. He said the project should be completed by the spring, when the Talbot Lady is ready to sail again.
Quimby and his family planned to spend New Year's Day at the Capitol. He said he wants a picture of himself by the tree while it is still decorated to be included in a series of mementos commemorating the project. "Every man, once in a lifetime, is entitled to a masterpiece, " Quimby said, and this is mine. Had been under restoration since we found her in 2009 next to a barn in Canton, New Jersey.
She was built as a pleasure boat and was privately owned. Her owner hoped to get her restored and back on the water, but died in 2018 after a long illness and before his dream of sailing her again could be realized. The owner's wife had been trying to find someone who would like to take on the challenge of restoring.
But we received confirmation that the boat finally collapsed in on itself and was lost in 2021, with the pushboat reportedly soon to follow. A few trim pieces were saved by the family. The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well.
