Vintage Seth Thomas Sonora Chime Clock 4 Bells Adamantine Case Running Brass Foot Missing. Here is an opportunity to own a Seth Thomas Sonora Chime 4 Bell Clock that is in very nice condition. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! Similar to a Sonora Special Chime No. 1, but that has an arched top case where this case top is flat.
Saw two of them in the internet sites we research our clocks on, one had "00" noted but not seeing that anywhere else. There is nothing like the sound of a bell versus a rod strike/chime clock. Once you have one, you will have a hard time every finding a rod or gong clock whose sound you like better.
Few of these clocks were made. This clock was probably made in the early 1920's period. Not sure what model this is yet. You be the judge at to the clock's age and the model number before acquiring. Nice adamantine case on this clock.
No cracks, repairs or splits to the case. The finish to the case does show some loss. Three of the four brass feet are in place as well, so missing one of the rear brass feet. I see nothing on the inside of the case or the outside to show that it was ever refinished at any time. The 8 day brass clock and chime movements appear to be in good condition.
The movements are very dirty though and will need to be tanked for cleaning and then reoiled. Not sure if any bushings need replacement either. Two of the three wind springs feel sound when keyed. Clock Doc recently serviced and cleaned the movement. There is no pendulum bob with this clock. The chimes unit appears to have a number on the back plate left leg, but with the chimes unit in place, cannot read it. There is no number on the back plate of the chimes unit.
The brass plates of the time and chimes' units show some loss of finish from oiling and time over the years. Each of the bells, is about 2.75 in diameter, and all sound great when the clock strikes and chimes. The hour strike bell is slightly larger. I did find similar cases online that also had this unique "sounding box" over the bells to resonate the sound better one would guess. None of the bells have any cracks or other damage that would impede their sound. The clock was made to chime every 15 minutes and then chimes, and strikes the number of hours on the hour. The chimes unit is to the Westminster chime sound.
C urrently striking and chiming since the movements has been serviced. The brass plate is in place to lif the strike hammers when you wish to silence the clock, but no lever is in place to raise the hammers. The nest of bells look good, other than needing a good cleaning and are securely attached to the case. The face of the clock does show some moderate wear to the silver colored finish.
Appears to be made of tin and has black colored numbers. Beautiful gold colored trim ring around the face. The hands match and look appropriate to the clock.
The wood door is in place, and the beveled glass is there as well. No cracks or blistering to the glass.
The rear door of the clock is still in place as is the latch that holds it in place. The clock will come with a winding key, but really needs a longer key with the right wind hole as too close to the hinge side of door. The clock stands 9.75" tall, by 11.25" across, by 7-3/8 wide. The clock face is 4.75 across.
The clock is in running, chiming, and striking condition. This was definitely a quality clock made around 100 years ago. If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, I would suggest you steer clear. One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art. They are not our modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks. The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well. With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description. Make sure that this clock meets your needs and requirements before deciding to acquire it. So again, ask all questions you have, come see in person or send a friend to see the clock on your behalf, prior to deciding to acquire it.Please check out our other Timeless Tokens store listings as we are regularly adding new items.
