Seth Thomas Chime Clock No. Fully restored, overhauled and offered for your consideration. I can assure you that this clock has been restored to run flawlessly in the manner it was originally designed to operate!

It has a beautiful brown mahogany doric arch cabinet with rich marqueterie accents. It keeps excellent mechanical time and all three trains (time, chime and strike) run strong for eight days on a single full wind. The regulator works well (as it should and must to keep this clock running accurately). The self-correcting, Westminster chime on tuned "Mayland" chime rods works flawlessly and has beautiful harmonics in this case.

The brass bezel has a little hinge droop but closes with a soft snap, as does the back cabinet door. There is nothing missing or broken. As far as I can tell, everything is original with the exception of the new Seth Thomas double-ended winding key and the thick beveled crystal glass, both of which were replaced by us. Here are some additional details about the Seth Thomas Chime No.

96 in general and this clock in particular. The Seth Thomas Chime No 96 is a vintage 1928 mantel clock which can be found on page 162 of noted authority Tran Duy Ly's reference book "Seth Thomas Clocks and Movements" Volume 1. It features the Seth Thomas Number "124" eight-day pendulum movement with a quarterly Westminster chime and hourly strike on five tuned premium Mayland Chime Rods. The chime mechanism is self-correcting and the quarterly chimes can be silenced. The beautiful brown two-toned mahogany cabinet case is accented by a genuine marqueterie inlay in a front panel. It has a 5 inch silverplated dial with applied raised bronze/brass numerals and matching bronze/brass colored serpentine hands. The sash has a polished brass finish with custom fitted and beveled convex glass. The cabinet measures 10 3/4" by 8 1/2" by 6. It would enhance just about any room or office decor. Tran Duy Ly doesn't give an original list price for the Chime No.

Clearly the Seth Thomas Chime 96 model is a well made, highly collectible Seth Thomas Westminster Chime Clock which still retains much of its original value 90+ years after it was manufactured. This clock has just been completely serviced and is ready to provide years of accurate mechanical time-keeping with its lovely cabinet and its beautifully resonant chime and strike. The service included the following.

Disassembly of the clock case and movement. Re-bushed all noticibly worn pivot holes with high quality brass bushings. Thorough cleaning of the disassembled movement in a specifically formulated clock cleaning solution. Installation of all three mainsprings with new high quality steel replacements. Dial was cleaned and re-silvered.

Cleaning of bezel, new glass, cabinet hardware and chimes by hand. Restoration of scratches, dents and small areas of loss with period appropriate materials. Refinishing of worn and damaged shellac with several coats of new shellac which was hand-rubbed.

Application and buffing of multiple coats of high quality furniture paste wax by hand. Again, application of highest quality Micro-crystalline "Renaissance" curator's wax to the Silvered Dial.

Reassembly of the clock, oil and lube in the proper places using high quality synthetic lubricants. Synthetics are generally considered to be better lubricants than the petro-chemical clock oils in that they lubricate better and they do not evaporate as readily. Adjustment of chime and strike hammer sequence to assure smooth and even strikes at each quarter-hour and hour. Replacement of worn hammer leather tips with new leather inserts. Adjustment of Chime Train's self-correction mechanism.

Electronic regulation and week-long monitoring of the movement's beat and rate on the test stand. Testing of the movement and reassembled clock for a total of three consecutive weeks of test stand and assembled operation. Although mainspring replacement is not always necessary with this movement , it is good practice to replace weak mainsprings because they are confined in relatively small brass canisters. Once the mainsprings become "set", or "tired", they can no longer power the mechanism adequately over the entire 8-day period the clock was intended to run on a single full winding. The new owner should not have to worry about this clock's mainsprings for a long time.

The original finish was pretty rough with numerous scratches in and discoloration of the original shellac coating and dents in the top of the Doric Arch. Please note that there is a small area of loss on the top right edge of the case. Now restored, the deep, rich brown mahogany wood cabinet with its genuine marqueterie inlay between the two front inlay outlined panels will compliment any home or office on a mantel, desk, table or shelf. With routine care and maintenance this clock will adorn the homes of any family for generations to come. The new owner will be provided with a new properly sized, double-ended brass Seth Thomas "Trade" winding key, a full set of written instructions for set-up, care and maintenance. You must see and hear this clock in order to truly appreciate its "presence". No beat-up boxes stuffed with old newspaper! No waiting around for the Carrier to pick-up the clock. We do not charge for the time and materials necessary to prepare your clock for a safe journey. View the photos closely and watch the video as they make up an important part of this listing. We hope to find a new owner whose family can enjoy it for many years to come.
