Antique German Black Forest Seth Thomas Fox & Owl In Grape Vineyard Cuckoo Clock

This is a beautifully hand carved, unusual, very rare, large cuckoo clock that was produced about 85 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany. " The clock was produced for an American company, "Seth Thomas and is by far one of the nicest designs I've seen in recent years and unlike any I've seen previously.

This incredible clock is absolutely beautiful and has a wonderful patina going for it. I only see modest signs of use and it works very well. It's theme is that of a red-eye fox that is trotting its way through a grape vineyard as depicted from the meticulously detailed vine on the front and top of this clock. There are eleven deeply carved, large grape leaves lavished on the front and another carved grape leaf is found on the wooden pendulum. The wooden carved fox is making his way through the vineyard while an equally impressive, large carved Black Forest Owl with amber eyes remains perched atop the clock watching him warily; charming! The carved top is a separate piece that is held to the roof edge via the old hook and eye system. There is a cluster of wooden grapes on either side of the dial.

The wooden dial has a black background and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and a rare set of matching, fancy, carved wooden hands to point out the time. There is a large wooden door at the very back that is secured with a metal latch. It easily removes to allow access to the all metal weight driven movement embossed with the words the clock was created for Seth Thomas Clocks. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activities.

The tall wooden bellow tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. At the top of each hour, the wooden bird appears again and correctly cuckoos the current number of hours before going back inside the clock; absolutely fascinating! I've looked the clock over fairly well and only find modest use with minor wear; no damage and no repairs. The movement does have a strike hammer for a chime but the chime is not present and undoubtedly not missed. The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it should.

It is very impressive and equally so in size too measuring about 17" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6" or so at its deepest point, and about 12 across the top. Even though it looks well preserved, it is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of maintenance. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We often recommend to our clock customers to have their vintage or antique clocks serviced at least once every three years.

Doing so will keep a classic clock like this one, healthy for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a carved grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clock is in a class all by itself, absolutely gorgeous on display, and is certain to be the focal point of any collection.
