THIS IS AN ANTIQUE 1880'S AMAZING SOUTHERN CALENDER CLOCK CO. 4 MODEL SHELF OR WALL CLOCK WITH A MASSIVE SETH THOMAS MOVEMENT. THE MODEL IS IN GOOD CONDITION, BUT THE CLOCK HAS AN OLD REPLACEMENT PAPER DIAL FOR THE TIME DIAL.
THE REPLACEMENT DIAL WOULD NEED TO BE CUT BY A CLOCK MAKER AND PROFESSIONALLY SET INTO THE ORIGINAL BEZEL. THE MOVEMENT AND CALENDER MECHANISM ARE OPERATING PROPERLY. THE CARVED WALNUT CASE IS HUGE AND IT FEATURES THE 3 REMOVABLE TURNED FINIALS, THE SIDE COLUMNS, THE ARCH MOLDED DOOR FRAME, THE GILT DECORATED WOOD DIAL SURROUNDS, AND A NEAT HIDDEN COMPARTMENT THAT WOULD HOUSE THE KEY AND PENDULUM IF THE CLOCK WAS BEING TRANSPORTED IN A CARRIAGE. (LAST PHOTO, BOTTOM LEFT) THE FINISH HAS DARKENED WITH AGE, BUT IT LOOKS ORIGINAL. THE WOOD IS A LITTLE DUSTY AND IT HAS THE EXPECTED LIGHT SCRATCHES AND SCUFFS. THE FINIALS ARE ORIGINAL, BUT THE TIPS HAVE ALL BEEN SHORTENED. THE DOOR LOCKS FROM THE LEFT SIDE WITH THE SAME KEY THAT WINDS THE ARBORS.THE CASE CAN SIT LEVEL ON A SHELF WITH THE LAYERED FEDERAL BASE MOLDING OR IS CAN HANG FROM THE BRASS HANGER. THE GLASS IN THE FRONT DOOR IS SLIGHT WAVY AT AN ANGLE AND IT IS ORIGINAL. THE REVERSE "FASHION" STENCIL IS THE ORIGINAL THICK PAINTED GOLD WORDING. IN THE 6TH PHOTO YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THE WAVES IN THE GLASS. THE UPPER DIAL IS ORIGINAL AND IT HAS A LOT OF FLAKING.
THE SECONDS SUBSIDIARY DIAL IS NOT ATTACHED VERY WELL AND IF THE TOP DIAL IS REMOVED FROM THE CASE IT WILL MOSTLIKEY SEPERATE. WHEN THE TIME DIAL IS IN THE CASE, THE SUB-DIAL STAYS PUT AND THE SECONDS HAND ROTATES WITH NO PROBLEM. THE CALENDAR DIAL IS SIGNED AND DATED. THE HANDS ON THE TIME DIAL ADVANCE PROPERLY.
THEY INITIATE THE LOUD BELL STRIKE APPROX. 1-2 MINUTES AFTER THE HOUR. THE CRESCENT MOON CALENDAR HAND IS ORIGINAL. THE CALENDAR HAND ADVANCES THE DATE PROPERLY AND IT SETS BY SIMPLY PUSHING IT FORWARD UNTIL YOU ARRIVE AT THE CORRECT DATE. THE CALENDAR DIAL IS PAINT OVER A ZINC PAN.
THAT PAN IS DENTED IN ON THE TOP LEFT SIDE. WE CHOSE NOT TO CORRECT THE DENT BECAUSE THE PAINT IS IN GOOD SHAPE ON THAT DIAL AND THAT WOULD DEFINATELY CAUSE THE PAINT TO CHIP OFF. THE ENORMOUS BRASS MOVEMENT HAS 8 DAY SPRINGS, AND BOTH SPRINGS WIND SMOOTHLY.
THE MOVEMENT WAS MADE BY SETH THOMAS FOR THE SOUTHERN CALENDAR CLOCK CO. AND ALL OF THAT INFORMATION INCLUDING THE DATE IS STAMPED RIGHT ONTO THE FRONT PLATE. THERE IS A LEVER THAT IS HIDDING BEHIND THE PENDULUM.
THAT LEVER PUSHES DOWN ON THE R. ANDREWS CALENDAR MECHANISM FOR IT TO TRIGGER THE DATE CHANGE. THE MOVEMENT IS EASY TO BALANCE, AND THE CALENDAR DRUM PAPERS ARE ORIGINAL. THE ORIGINAL BLUE DIRECTIONS LABEL FOR SETTING THE CALENDER IS IN TERRIFIC SHAPE. IN ORDER TO SET THE DRUMS YOU JUST ROTATE THEM CAREFULLY FORWARD BY HAND.THE CLOCK HAS A LOVELY LOUD BELL STRIKE TO COUNT THE HOURS. THE BRASS BELL IS HUGE AND THE SWEET SOUND RESONATES FOR APPROX. 10-15 SECONDS AFTER THE HAMMER IS DONE, SIMILAR TO A CLOCK TOWER.
THE STRIKE COUNT IS CORRECT AND IT FUNCTIONS WONDERFULLY. (THERE IS NO PASSING HALF-HOUR STRIKE). THE CLOCK COMES WITH THE ORIGINAL DAMASCENED CLOCK PENDULUM AND THE BRASS KEY. THE REPLACEMENT DIAL HAS THE SAME PATENT DATE THAT IS ON THE MOVEMENT. (1875) THE ORIGINAL DIAL HAS THE SECOND PATENT OF 1879. IMPORTANT: THE PENDULUM HAS JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF CLEARENCE TO SWING BACK AND FORTH. IF THE SCREWS FOR THE WOOD BACKINGS THAT THE DIALS ARE ATTACHED TO, ARE TIGHTENED TOO MUCH THAT WILL CAUSE THE DIAL PANS TO TOUCH THE BOB. AGAIN THE REPLACEMENT DIAL THAT COMES WITH THE CLOCK WOULD HAVE TO BE CUT AND PUT IN THE BEZEL BY A PROFESSIONAL IF IT WAS TO BE USED. 4 DO TO THE WEAR TO THE DIAL. THE DOUBLE DIAL FASHION NO.4 MANTEL / WALL CLOCK MEASURES : EXTERIOR - 32" TALL X 16 " WIDE X 6 DEEP. WE MAKE SURE THAT WE MEASURE TWICE AND DO OUR BEST TO DESCRIBE EACH ITEM.
