AMERICANA TIME HISTORY SPECIMENS THIS FINE ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SANTA FE KOPPERL TEXAS STATION DEPOT. A group of finance entrepreneurs, business men, and merchants in Galveston, including Moritz Kopperl, a Galveston bank President, seeded a plan to form the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway Company in 1873. Part of the concept was to build a railroad route to connect Galveston Texas with Fort Worth, thereby capturing the central Texas cotton export trade.
One of the stations on the route was Kopperl, Texas, north of Temple and South of Cleburne, also designated as Station F315 on the Santa Fe line. The depot was completed in 1881. As was the custom during the RR growth period, the location was named Kopperl, to honor one of the founders of Gulf, Colorado And Santa Fe Railroad, Moritz Kopperl. Kopperl remains on the Santa Fe line; however the active station was relocated about one mile due to construction of a watershed in the area in the 1951 time frame. A railroad spur then connected the rerouted main line to the original Kopperl Depot.
During that time period some of the furniture and equipment was removed from Santa Fe property records and transferred to private ownership, including the Kopperl Station clock which I acquired, performed a full restoration, and added to my personal collection. Included with this American Railroad System Clock is a full set of documentation and articles of interest. There is no doubt as to the authenticity of this particular Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway Company Station Clock.
