Seth Thomas Mantel Clock Beautifully Inlaid Case Porcelain Face Runs and Strikes. A nicely done Seth Thomas mantel clock like this one does not come along very often. The wood case is just incredible.
Look at the inlay on the front and sides. There is some minor crazing to the finish of the clock, but to me just adds to the beauty. My guess is this clock is from the late 1870s to 1890s, but you be the judge. I see only a small chip of the trim on the front right side just under the arched top to report, a chip in the arch at apex on the back and then 3 chips to the arched piece at bottom front of case. Also, a small piece of inlay missing at bottom right front leg. Check out the arched legs on this case, not something that Seth Thomas was known for. Most of their clocks were very stark and common looking, not like this piece. The clock does run and strike, it required no servicing by me. It strikes the hours on the hour, and one strike on the half hour. Great porcelain face with "Made by Seth Thomas in USA" on the bottom of face and then "Seth Thomas" in Script about a 1/3 of way down on face. The glass over the face is intact, no cracks or blistering. Bezel that holds the glass is sound as is the hinge. Top hinge on rear door is a little loose. The movement has the "ST" logo on it and then, "A-48-R" below it. The clock stands 13.5" tall, by 9" across, by 4.5 wide.
Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well. With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description.
If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, I would suggest you steer clear. One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art. They are not our modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks. Make sure that this item meets your needs and requirements before deciding to acquire it. So again, ask all questions you have, come see in person (Wilmington, DE) or send a friend to see the piece on your behalf, prior to deciding to acquire it.
